How to Make a Calm-Down Space

Create your own personal cozy corner where you can go to relax and feel better when big feelings arrive. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Pick your spot. Find a corner, a space under a desk, or a spot behind a chair that feels private and cozy. Make sure it is a place where you feel safe and comfortable.
  2. Make it soft. Lay down your blanket to create a soft floor. Arrange your pillows so you have a comfortable place to sit or lean back. If you have a favorite stuffed animal, bring them along to keep you company.
  3. Add your calming tools. Place your basket of items nearby. Choose things that help you feel peaceful, like a book you love, a fidget toy, or a drawing pad. Avoid things that make you feel excited or active, like noisy games or bright screens.
  4. Set the mood. If you want, ask a grown-up to help you set up a low light or a soft lamp. Having dimmer light can help your body and brain know it is time to slow down.
