How to Ask for Help When You Are Stuck

Learn how to identify when you need a hand and how to ask for it clearly and confidently. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Take a deep breath. When you feel frustrated, pause for a moment. Take three slow breaths. This helps your brain stop feeling 'stuck' and start thinking about what you need.
  2. Identify the specific problem. Figure out exactly where you are hitting a wall. Instead of saying 'I can't do this,' try to pinpoint the part that is hard. For example, 'I know how to start the drawing, but I don't know how to draw the hands.'
  3. Find the right person. Look for a grown-up, teacher, or friend who has the time to help. If they look very busy, ask, 'Are you available to help me with something for a minute?'
  4. Make your request. Use clear words to ask for what you need. Try saying, 'I am stuck on this part, could you show me how you would do it?' or 'Could you explain this step to me again?'
  5. Listen and learn. Watch and listen while they show you. If you still don't understand, it is okay to ask, 'Could you show me one more time?'
