How to Make Your Own Jigsaw Puzzle at Home
Create custom jigsaw puzzles using family photos or artwork with simple materials you already have at home.
- Choose Your Image and Materials. Select a high-quality photo or image that's meaningful to your family. Print it on sturdy photo paper or regular paper, sizing it between 8x10 to 11x14 inches for best results. Gather your supplies: the printed image, a piece of cardboard or foam board slightly larger than your image, glue stick or spray adhesive, clear contact paper or laminating sheets (optional), pencil, and scissors or craft knife.
- Mount Your Image. Apply glue evenly to the back of your printed image, working from center outward to avoid air bubbles. Press the image firmly onto your cardboard or foam board, smoothing out any wrinkles. Let it dry completely for at least 30 minutes. For extra durability, cover the front with clear contact paper or laminate the mounted image, trimming excess material around the edges.
- Design Your Puzzle Pieces. Turn your mounted image face-down and use a pencil to lightly sketch your puzzle piece pattern on the back. For beginners, start with simple interlocking squares or rectangles. More experienced crafters can create traditional curved puzzle pieces with tabs and blanks. Make pieces larger for younger children (12-24 pieces total) and smaller for older kids and adults (50-200+ pieces). Ensure each piece connects to at least two others.
- Cut Out the Pieces. Using sharp scissors or a craft knife, carefully cut along your pencil lines. Take your time and cut slowly for clean edges that fit together well. If using a craft knife, work on a cutting mat to protect your surface. Start with straight edges and border pieces, then move to interior pieces. Test-fit pieces as you go to ensure they connect properly.
- Create Storage and Instructions. Place your completed puzzle pieces in a sturdy box or resealable bag. Include a small photo of the original image as a reference guide. Write the number of pieces on the container and add any special instructions. Consider making multiple puzzles and storing them in decorated boxes for gift-giving or family game night rotation.
