How to Improve Your Memory for Games and Puzzles
Learn simple, effective techniques to sharpen your memory and win more games using visualization and association. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Use the 'Picture in Your Mind' trick. When you look at a card or a puzzle piece, don't just glance at it. Close your eyes and try to draw a picture of it in your mind. Notice the colors, the shapes, and any tiny details. The more detail you see in your head, the easier it is to remember later.
- Create a story connection. If you are trying to remember a sequence of items, make up a silly story that links them together. For example, if you need to remember a blue bird and a red car, imagine the blue bird driving the red car to the park. Your brain loves stories and remembers them much better than just a list of facts.
- Practice in short bursts. Your brain gets tired just like your muscles do. Set a timer for 10 minutes to practice your memory games. When the timer goes off, take a break to stretch or grab a glass of water. Practicing for short, focused amounts of time is better than trying to memorize everything at once.
- Review and reflect. After you finish a game or puzzle, write down one thing that helped you remember better in your notebook. Did you use a story? Did you focus on the colors? Knowing what works for you will help you get better every single time you play.
