How to Solve a Crossword Puzzle Faster
Learn proven strategies to speed up your crossword solving skills with tips that work for the whole family.
- Start with what you know best. Begin by scanning the entire puzzle for clues you can answer immediately. Fill in any obvious answers first, focusing on short words (3-4 letters) and proper nouns like names or places. Don't worry about solving clues in order – jump around the puzzle to build momentum. This creates a foundation of letters that will help you solve intersecting words more easily.
- Look for common patterns and word endings. Pay attention to common word endings like -ING, -ED, -LY, or -TION. If you see a clue that suggests a past tense verb, look for spaces that could fit -ED at the end. Similarly, adverb clues often end in -LY. Learn to recognize these patterns quickly – they're your shortcuts to faster solving.
- Use crossing letters as clues. When you're stuck on a word, focus on the intersecting clues instead. Often, solving a crossing word will give you one or two letters that make the original clue much easier. Don't spend too much time staring at one difficult clue – move to another area and come back when you have more letters filled in.
- Know your crossword vocabulary. Crosswords have their own common words that appear frequently. Words like ERA, ORE, ALE, and EEL show up often because they have useful vowel patterns. Three-letter words for 'old' (OLD), 'eggs' (OVA), or 'bird' (ERN) are crossword staples. The more you solve, the more you'll recognize these repeat performers.
- Work systematically through the grid. After filling in your initial easy answers, work section by section rather than randomly jumping around. Focus on one corner or area until you've solved most of it, then move to the next section. This approach helps you see patterns and makes better use of the letters you've already filled in.
- Don't overthink the clues. Crossword clues are often more straightforward than they appear. If a clue seems too complicated, step back and think of the most obvious answer first. Avoid getting trapped by trying to be too clever – sometimes the simple answer is correct. Remember that most crosswords match their clue style to the answer's complexity.
