How to Make Your Own Pizza Sauce from Tomatoes

Learn to make delicious homemade pizza sauce from fresh or canned tomatoes with simple ingredients your family will love.

  1. Gather Your Ingredients. You'll need: 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes or 4-5 fresh tomatoes, 2 cloves garlic (minced), 1 teaspoon dried oregano, 1 teaspoon dried basil, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, 1 tablespoon olive oil, and 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity). If using fresh tomatoes, you'll also need boiling water for blanching.
  2. Prepare Fresh Tomatoes (If Using). If you're using fresh tomatoes, bring a pot of water to boil. Cut a small X on the bottom of each tomato. Drop tomatoes into boiling water for 1-2 minutes, then immediately put them in cold water. The skins will slip right off. Remove stems and seeds, then crush the tomatoes by hand or with a fork.
  3. Cook the Sauce. Heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Add your crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Stir everything together and bring to a gentle simmer. Reduce heat to low and let it cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce should thicken slightly. Taste and add sugar if the sauce seems too acidic.
  4. Cool and Store. Let the sauce cool completely before using or storing. You can use it right away on pizza, or store it in the refrigerator for up to one week. For longer storage, freeze the sauce in small containers for up to three months. This recipe makes enough sauce for 2-3 medium pizzas.
