How to Make Pancakes by Yourself
A step-by-step guide for kids and teens to safely make delicious pancakes on their own.
- Safety First. Before you start cooking, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Make sure an adult knows you're cooking and is nearby in case you need help. Keep pot holders or oven mitts within reach, and never leave the stove unattended. If you're under 10, ask an adult to help you with the hot stove and flipping pancakes.
- Gather Your Ingredients. You'll need: 1 cup all-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1 cup milk, 1 large egg, 2 tablespoons melted butter (plus extra for the pan), and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional). Measure everything carefully and set it all out on your counter before you begin.
- Mix the Batter. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a separate smaller bowl, whisk the egg, then add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently stir with a wooden spoon or whisk until just combined. Don't worry if the batter looks a little lumpy - that's perfect! Overmixing makes tough pancakes.
- Heat Your Pan. Place a non-stick pan or griddle over medium heat. Let it warm up for about 2 minutes. To test if it's ready, sprinkle a few drops of water on the surface - they should sizzle and evaporate quickly. Add a small amount of butter to the pan and let it melt, then wipe it around with a paper towel.
- Cook the Pancakes. Pour about 1/4 cup of batter into the pan for each pancake. Don't make them too big - smaller pancakes are easier to flip. Cook until you see bubbles forming on the surface and the edges look set, about 2-3 minutes. Carefully flip with a spatula and cook for another 1-2 minutes until golden brown. The first pancake might not look perfect, and that's totally normal!
- Serve and Enjoy. Stack your pancakes on a plate and add your favorite toppings - butter, maple syrup, fresh fruit, or even chocolate chips. Serve them warm for the best taste. Don't forget to turn off the stove and clean up your workspace when you're done cooking.
