How to Make Your First Salad

Learn how to wash, chop, and toss your own fresh, crunchy salad with this simple guide. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Wash your veggies. Place your lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumber into the colander. Rinse them thoroughly under cool, running water. Gently shake the colander to remove the extra water.
  2. Prepare the greens. Use your hands to tear the lettuce leaves into bite-sized pieces. Drop them directly into your large mixing bowl.
  3. Chop the crunch. Ask a grown-up to show you the best way to hold your knife. Carefully slice the cucumber into thin rounds and cut the cherry tomatoes in half. Add them to the bowl.
  4. Toss and serve. Drizzle a little bit of your favorite dressing over the top. Use clean hands or two large spoons to gently mix everything together so the dressing covers all the leaves.
