How to Make Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag

Learn how to turn cream, sugar, and ice into a delicious frozen treat using just two zip-top bags and some muscle. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Mix your base. Pour the half-and-half, sugar, and vanilla into the small zip-top bag. Squeeze as much air out as you can and seal it tightly. Double-check that it is closed all the way.
  2. Prepare the ice. Place the ice cubes and the salt into the large zip-top bag. The salt helps the ice get much colder than usual, which is the secret to freezing your ice cream.
  3. Combine and shake. Place the small bag inside the large bag with the ice. Seal the large bag tightly. Wrap the bag in a towel or use oven mitts to protect your hands from the cold, then shake the bag vigorously for about 5 to 10 minutes.
  4. Check and serve. Open the large bag and carefully remove the small bag. Wipe the outside of the small bag clean so no salt gets into your treat, then open it and scoop your ice cream into a bowl.
