How to Make Pancakes from Scratch

A kid-friendly guide to mixing and flipping your own fluffy, homemade pancakes for a delicious breakfast. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Mix the dry ingredients. In your large bowl, add the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Use your whisk to stir them together until everything is well combined.
  2. Add the wet ingredients. Make a small hole in the middle of your dry mix. Pour in the milk, the egg, and the melted butter. Whisk it all together until the batter is smooth—it is okay if there are a few tiny lumps!
  3. Heat the pan. Ask a grown-up to turn the stove to medium heat. Once the pan is warm, use a little butter or cooking spray to coat the surface so the pancakes don't stick.
  4. Cook your pancakes. Use your ladle to scoop batter into the pan. Wait until you see little bubbles popping on the top of the pancake, then ask a grown-up to help you flip it over to cook the other side until it is golden brown.
