How to Build a Fort That Won't Fall Down

Learn simple techniques to build sturdy blanket forts and pillow forts that stay up during playtime.

  1. Choose the Right Location. Pick a spot with existing anchor points like chair backs, couch arms, or a bed frame. Corners work especially well because walls provide natural support on two sides. Avoid high-traffic areas where people might accidentally bump into your fort. Make sure you have enough floor space for everyone who wants to play inside.
  2. Gather Your Materials. You'll need something for the roof (lightweight blankets work better than heavy comforters), anchor points (chairs, couch cushions, or furniture), and clips or weights to secure everything (clothespins, chip clips, or heavy books). Pillows and cushions make great walls and foundations. Avoid using anything breakable or valuable as fort materials.
  3. Build a Strong Foundation. Start by arranging your furniture or cushions to create the basic frame. Place heavier items like couch cushions on the bottom to create stable walls. Make sure everything is firmly in place before adding the roof. The foundation should feel solid when you gently push on it.
  4. Create a Secure Roof. Drape your blanket over your anchor points, making sure it's not stretched too tight—this creates tension that can pull everything down. Use clips or heavy books to secure the blanket edges to furniture. If the blanket keeps slipping, try tucking the edges under cushions or mattresses instead of just draping them over furniture edges.
  5. Test and Adjust. Before declaring your fort complete, gently test its stability by carefully crawling inside and moving around a little. If anything wobbles or shifts, adjust the foundation or re-secure the roof. Add extra support where needed—sometimes an additional pillow or repositioned chair makes all the difference.
  6. Reinforce Weak Spots. Pay attention to areas where the blanket might slip or where the structure feels wobbly. Add extra clips at these points, or place a heavy book on blanket edges that keep lifting. If one side keeps collapsing, try moving that anchor point closer to provide better support.
