How to Paint a Beautiful Mural on Your Child's Bedroom Wall
Learn step-by-step how to create a stunning bedroom wall mural that your kids will love, from planning to finishing touches.
- Choose Your Design and Wall. Start by selecting which wall will work best for your mural - typically the wall behind the bed or the one your child sees when entering the room. Involve your child in choosing the design theme, whether it's underwater scenes, forests, space, or their favorite characters. Keep the design age-appropriate and consider how it might grow with your child. Sketch your ideas on paper first, or find inspiration online. Measure your wall and plan how the design will fit the space, noting any outlets, switches, or furniture that might affect the layout.
- Gather Your Supplies. You'll need acrylic paints in your chosen colors, various brush sizes (flat and round brushes in small, medium, and large), a pencil for sketching, an eraser, painter's tape, drop cloths or plastic sheeting, small containers for water and mixing paint, paper towels or rags, and a ladder or step stool if needed. Consider getting a projector if your design is complex - you can project printed images onto the wall to trace. For younger children helping with the project, have washable paints and child-sized brushes ready.
- Prepare the Wall. Clean the wall thoroughly with a damp cloth and let it dry completely. If the wall has holes or imperfections, fill them with spackling paste and sand smooth once dry. Remove any outlet covers if you'll be painting around them, and turn off electricity to those outlets for safety. Lay drop cloths on the floor and tape them to the baseboards. Use painter's tape to protect ceiling edges, baseboards, and any areas you don't want painted. If your wall is dark and your mural will be light colors, consider applying a coat of white primer first.
- Sketch Your Design. Using a pencil, lightly sketch your design directly onto the wall. Start with basic shapes and outlines - you can always add details later. If you're using a projector, this step becomes much easier as you can simply trace the projected image. Don't worry about making it perfect at this stage. Step back frequently to check proportions and make sure everything looks balanced. If you make mistakes, simply erase and try again. For complex designs, consider sketching just the main elements first and adding smaller details as you paint.
- Start Painting. Begin with the background colors and largest areas first, then work your way to smaller details. Use larger brushes for big areas and switch to smaller brushes for details. Let each color dry completely before adding adjacent colors to prevent smudging. Work from top to bottom when possible to avoid dripping paint on finished areas. If you're painting with your child, give them simpler areas to fill in while you handle the detailed work. Take breaks when needed - murals don't have to be completed in one day. Keep a damp cloth nearby to quickly clean up any mistakes.
- Add Details and Finishing Touches. Once your main design is complete and dry, add the final details that will bring your mural to life. This includes things like facial features, textures, highlights, and small decorative elements. Use your smallest brushes for this work and take your time. Consider adding some interactive elements at your child's height, like flowers they can 'smell' or animals they can 'pet.' Step back frequently to assess your work and see if anything needs adjusting. When you're satisfied with the result, carefully remove all painter's tape while the paint is still slightly tacky to ensure clean lines.
- Protect and Maintain Your Mural. Allow the mural to dry completely for at least 24 hours before moving furniture back against the wall. If the mural is in a high-traffic area or your child tends to touch walls, consider applying a clear, washable protective coating designed for painted walls. Take photos of your finished mural to preserve the memory. For future touch-ups, keep leftover paint in labeled containers and store them properly. Clean the mural gently with a slightly damp cloth when needed, avoiding harsh scrubbing that might damage the paint.
