How to Make a Dream Catcher Step by Step

Learn to create beautiful dream catchers with your family using simple materials and easy-to-follow steps.

  1. Gather Your Materials. You'll need a metal or wooden hoop (4-8 inches work best), yarn or embroidery thread in your favorite colors, feathers, beads with holes large enough for your thread, scissors, and glue. Optional extras include ribbons, small charms, or additional decorative elements. Many craft stores sell dream catcher kits that include everything you need, which can be helpful for beginners.
  2. Wrap the Hoop. Start by tying one end of your yarn to the hoop with a small knot. Wrap the yarn tightly around the entire hoop, covering the metal or wood completely. Keep the wraps close together so no bare hoop shows through. When you reach your starting point, tie off the yarn with another knot and trim any excess. This creates the foundation for your dream catcher.
  3. Create the Web Pattern. Tie a new piece of yarn to the top of your wrapped hoop. Working clockwise, loop the yarn around the hoop about every inch, pulling it through to create a loose stitch. Don't pull too tight - you want gentle curves between each point. Continue around the entire hoop, then start your second row by looping the yarn around the middle of each curve from the first row. Keep going in smaller circles until you reach the center, leaving a small hole in the middle.
  4. Add Beads to the Web. As you work on your web, slide beads onto your yarn before making some of the loops. Space them out randomly or create a pattern - whatever looks good to you. The beads add beautiful color and catch the light nicely. If the bead holes are too small for your yarn, you can thread them onto a thinner string and tie that into your web.
  5. Attach the Feathers and Final Touches. Cut three pieces of yarn, each about 6-8 inches long. Tie them to the bottom of your hoop, spacing them evenly. Thread beads onto these hanging strands, then tie feathers to the ends. You can also add small charms or ribbons. Make sure everything is secure by gently tugging on each element. Finish by creating a hanging loop at the top of your dream catcher using a piece of yarn or ribbon.
