How to Create Beautiful Mosaics from Broken Tiles or Paper

Learn to make stunning mosaic art with your family using broken tiles, paper scraps, and simple household materials.

  1. Gather Your Materials. You'll need a base surface like cardboard, wood, or a picture frame, broken tiles or colored paper cut into small pieces, white craft glue or tile adhesive, grout (optional for tile mosaics), tweezers or small tongs, pencils for sketching, and protective materials like newspaper and aprons. For tile mosaics, you can break old ceramic tiles by wrapping them in a towel and gently tapping with a hammer (adults only). For paper mosaics, cut magazines, construction paper, or scrapbook paper into small squares or irregular shapes.
  2. Plan Your Design. Start simple with basic shapes, patterns, or pictures like flowers, hearts, or geometric designs. Sketch your idea lightly on your base surface with pencil. Sort your tile pieces or paper by color and size in separate containers or paper plates. This organization will make the actual mosaic work much smoother and more enjoyable for everyone involved.
  3. Create Your Mosaic. Begin placing pieces from the center of your design outward, or start with the main focal point and work around it. Leave small gaps between pieces (about 1/8 inch for tiles, smaller for paper) to create the classic mosaic look. Apply glue to small sections at a time rather than covering the whole surface at once. Use tweezers to pick up and place tiny pieces precisely. Take breaks when fingers get tired or concentration wanes.
  4. Add Finishing Touches. For paper mosaics, once all pieces are glued down and completely dry, you can apply a thin coat of clear craft sealer to protect the surface. For tile mosaics, you can add grout by mixing it according to package directions and spreading it over the surface with a plastic spreader, then wiping away excess with a damp sponge. Allow everything to dry completely before handling or displaying your finished artwork.
