How to Design Your Own Video Game Characters
Learn the creative process behind building unique video game characters from initial sketches to finished personality profiles.
- Define the character's role. Before you draw, decide if your character is a hero, a villain, or a sidekick. Think about what they do in the game—do they jump, cast spells, or drive fast cars? Write down three things your character is good at.
- Sketch the silhouette. Start with simple shapes like circles, squares, or triangles to form the body. A hero might have strong, boxy shoulders, while a fast character might look lean and pointy. Keep your lines light so you can erase them later.
- Add defining features. Give your character one item that makes them stand out, like a glowing cape, a futuristic helmet, or a unique tool. This helps players recognize your character instantly.
- Inking and coloring. Use your black fine-tip pen to go over the lines you like best. Once the ink is dry, erase the extra pencil marks. Pick a color palette—usually 2 or 3 main colors—that matches your character's personality.
