Learn how to build an exciting adventure story from start to finish using simple steps to spark your imagination. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Pick your hero and their goal. Every great adventure needs a main character. Think about who they are and what they want. Maybe they are a brave explorer looking for a hidden map, or a squirrel trying to find the legendary golden acorn. Write down their name and one big thing they want to achieve.
  2. Create a challenge. A story is only an adventure if things get a little tricky! Think about what stands in your character's way. Is it a stormy mountain, a giant wall, or a mysterious creature? Write down one obstacle that makes your hero pause and think.
  3. Write the beginning. Start your story by showing us where your character is. Don't worry about being perfect. Just describe the scene: Is it sunny? Is it dark and spooky? Introduce your character and show them starting their journey.
  4. Build the action. Now, let your character face the challenge you thought of in Step 2. Describe what they see, hear, and feel. Use action words like 'sprinted,' 'climbed,' or 'whispered' to make the scene feel fast and exciting.
  5. Find the ending. How does your character overcome the challenge? Maybe they use a special tool, or maybe they make a new friend. Write the final scene where your hero finishes their goal or learns something important. Ask a grown-up to read it with you if you want help checking your sentences.
