How to Make a Cardboard Robot Costume

Turn recycled boxes into a cool, custom robot costume with this simple step-by-step guide. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Prepare the body. Ask a grown-up to help you cut a hole in the top of the large box for your head and two holes on the sides for your arms. Make sure the holes are big enough for you to move comfortably.
  2. Create the head. Cut a rectangular opening in your smaller box so you can see out clearly. You can cover the box with aluminum foil to give it a shiny, metallic look.
  3. Add your robot controls. Glue your bottle caps and buttons onto the front of your torso box. These are your control dials! Use markers to draw gauges or lights to finish your robot's personality.
  4. Assemble the suit. Attach your paper towel rolls to the side holes of your torso box using tape. Now you have robot arms! Put on your boxes and check that you can move your arms and head easily.
