How to Create a Backyard Nature Scavenger Hunt

Learn how to turn your backyard into a fun exploration zone by creating your own nature scavenger hunt list. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Make your list. Grab your paper and write down things you think you might find outside. Think of different categories: something green, something soft, a round rock, or a feather. If you need help, ask a grown-up to help you brainstorm.
  2. Draw your treasures. Next to each item on your list, draw a small picture of it. This helps you remember what you are looking for while you are busy searching.
  3. Start your hunt. Walk slowly through your yard. Look under leaves, near tree trunks, and in the grass. When you find an item, check it off your list and put it in your bag if it is okay to collect—remember, only pick up things that have already fallen, like leaves or sticks.
  4. Review your findings. Once you have found everything, sit down with a grown-up and show them your treasures. Tell them where you found each one and why you think it ended up there.
