How to Teach Kids to Blow Their Nose Properly

Learn step-by-step techniques to teach children of all ages how to blow their nose effectively and safely.

  1. Start with the basics. Begin by explaining what nose blowing does - it helps clear mucus so they can breathe better. Show them how to hold a tissue properly, covering both nostrils. Demonstrate the motion yourself first, explaining that they need to breathe out through their nose, not suck in. Make sure they understand to use a clean tissue each time.
  2. Practice the technique step by step. Have your child hold the tissue over their nose with both hands. Teach them to press gently on one nostril while blowing softly through the other. The key word is 'gently' - hard blowing can push mucus into the ears or sinuses. Switch sides and repeat. Encourage them to blow softly and steadily rather than in short, forceful bursts.
  3. Make it fun with games and practice. Turn learning into play by having them practice blowing air through their nose when they're not congested. Try blowing a feather or tissue paper across a table using just nose air. You can also practice with a mirror so they can see what they're doing. Praise their efforts, even if they don't get it right away.
  4. Teach proper hygiene habits. Show them how to throw the tissue away immediately after use and wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water. Explain that used tissues have germs that can make others sick. If no tissue is available, teach them to blow into their elbow, not their hands.
  5. Help when they're actually congested. When your child has a cold, stay nearby to guide them through the process. Congested noses make blowing more challenging, so extra patience is needed. If they're struggling, try having them blow very gently or consider using saline drops to soften mucus first. Never force it if they're resistant or upset.
