How to Make a Kaleidoscope That Really Works

Create a beautiful, functioning kaleidoscope at home using simple materials like toilet paper tubes, mirrors, and colorful beads.

  1. Gather Your Materials. You'll need: one empty toilet paper tube or paper towel tube cut to 8 inches, three small mirrors (about 7 inches long and 1 inch wide - you can buy mirror tiles and have them cut at a hardware store), clear plastic container lid or small clear plastic cup, wax paper or tissue paper, colorful small objects like beads, sequins, or small pieces of colored plastic, black electrical tape or duct tape, and scissors. The mirrors are the most important part - they need to be real glass or acrylic mirrors, not just shiny paper, for the kaleidoscope to work properly.
  2. Create the Mirror Triangle. Take your three mirrors and arrange them with the reflective sides facing inward to form a triangle. The mirrors should be standing up like walls. Tape the edges together with small pieces of tape to hold this triangle shape. This mirror triangle is the heart of your kaleidoscope - it's what creates the beautiful repeating patterns you'll see. Slide this mirror triangle into your tube. It should fit snugly but not be forced.
  3. Make the Object Chamber. Take your clear plastic lid or small clear container and fill it about one-quarter full with your colorful small objects. Don't overfill it - the objects need room to move around freely. Cover the open end with wax paper or tissue paper and secure it with tape. This creates a chamber where your beads and objects can tumble around. Tape this chamber securely to one end of your tube.
  4. Create the Viewing End. At the other end of the tube (the end you'll look through), cut a small circle in the center of a piece of dark paper or use black tape to cover the end, leaving only a small peephole about the size of a dime. This helps focus your view and makes the patterns more vivid. Make sure the hole is centered so you're looking straight down the middle of the mirror triangle.
  5. Test and Adjust Your Kaleidoscope. Hold your kaleidoscope up to a light source and look through the viewing end while gently rotating the object chamber. You should see beautiful, symmetrical patterns that change as you turn the chamber and as the objects inside move around. If the patterns look dull, try pointing it toward a brighter light. If you can't see clear patterns, check that your mirrors are clean and properly positioned with reflective sides facing inward.
