How to Build a Solar-Powered Oven from a Pizza Box

Create a fun and educational solar oven using a simple pizza box to teach kids about renewable energy.

  1. Gather Your Materials. You'll need a clean pizza box (medium or large works best), black construction paper, aluminum foil, plastic wrap or a clear plastic bag, black electrical tape or duct tape, scissors or a box cutter, a ruler, and a small dark-colored pot or container. Optional items include a thermometer to measure temperature and food items like chocolate, marshmallows, or cheese for testing your oven.
  2. Create the Solar Collector Flap. On the pizza box lid, draw a square that's about 1 inch smaller than the lid on all sides. Carefully cut along three sides of this square, leaving one side as a hinge to create a flap. The flap should fold upward and outward. Cover the inside surface of this flap with aluminum foil, shiny side facing out, and secure with tape. This flap will reflect sunlight into your oven.
  3. Line the Oven Interior. Cover the bottom inside of the pizza box completely with aluminum foil, shiny side up, and tape it down smoothly. Then place black construction paper over the foil on the bottom of the box. The foil reflects heat while the black paper absorbs it, creating the heating effect you need.
  4. Create the Greenhouse Effect. Stretch plastic wrap tightly over the opening you cut in the lid, covering the entire square hole. Tape the plastic wrap securely around all edges to create an airtight seal. This creates a greenhouse effect, trapping warm air inside your solar oven. Make sure the plastic is smooth and taut for best results.
  5. Test Your Solar Oven. Place your dark-colored container with food inside the box on the black paper. Close the lid and prop open the foil-covered flap so it reflects sunlight through the plastic wrap and into the box. Position your oven in direct sunlight and adjust the flap angle to catch the most light. Your oven should reach temperatures between 150-200°F on a sunny day.
  6. Cook and Monitor. Cooking times will vary based on sunlight strength and outside temperature. Simple items like melting chocolate or warming up a small piece of cheese can take 30-60 minutes. Check your food periodically but try not to open the box too often, as this releases the trapped heat. Move your oven to follow the sun's path for consistent heating.
