How to Sew a Button Back On: A Step-by-Step Guide for the Whole Family

Learn how to sew a button back on clothing with this simple, family-friendly tutorial that builds essential life skills.

  1. What You'll Need. Gather these basic supplies: the loose button, a needle (medium size works best), thread that matches the button or fabric, small scissors, and good lighting. If you have a thimble, it can protect your finger from needle pricks. For younger children, consider using a large plastic needle designed for kids.
  2. Preparing Your Thread. Cut about 18 inches of thread - longer pieces tend to tangle. Thread your needle and tie a knot at the end. For extra strength, you can double the thread by folding it in half, but this makes it thicker and harder for beginners to manage.
  3. Finding the Right Spot. Look for small holes or thread remnants where the old button was attached. If you can't see clear marks, line up the buttonhole with where the button should sit when the garment is closed. Mark this spot lightly with a pencil if needed.
  4. Sewing the Button. Start from underneath the fabric and push your needle up through one of the button's holes. Pull the thread through, leaving the knot on the back side. Push the needle down through another hole (or the same hole if it's a shank button). Repeat this process 4-6 times to make it secure. For buttons with four holes, create an X pattern or two parallel lines.
  5. Creating a Shank. For thicker fabrics like coats, create a small space between the button and fabric by placing a toothpick on top of the button while sewing. This 'shank' gives room for the fabric layers when buttoned. Remove the toothpick and wrap your thread around the base of the button several times before making your final knot.
  6. Finishing Strong. Make your final stitch on the back side of the fabric. Tie 2-3 small, tight knots close to the fabric. Trim excess thread with scissors, leaving about a quarter-inch tail. Test the button gently to make sure it feels secure before wearing the garment.
