How to Pack a Suitcase for a Trip

Learn smart packing strategies to fit everything your family needs while keeping luggage organized and manageable.

  1. Plan Before You Pack. Start by checking the weather forecast for your destination and making a list of activities you'll do. This helps you pack only what you'll actually need. Choose a suitcase that's appropriate for your trip length - a small carry-on for short trips, larger checked bags for longer stays. Lay out all items before packing to see what you're working with and eliminate anything unnecessary.
  2. Pack Heavy Items First. Place heavy items like shoes, toiletries, and books at the bottom of your suitcase near the wheels. This keeps the weight balanced and prevents lighter items from getting crushed. Fill shoes with small items like socks or chargers to save space. Keep the weight distributed evenly across the bottom of the suitcase.
  3. Roll and Fold Strategically. Roll t-shirts, underwear, and casual clothes to save space and prevent wrinkles. Fold structured items like dress shirts and pants along their natural creases. Layer folded items on top of your heavy base layer. Use the bundle wrapping method for delicate items - wrap them in tissue paper or plastic bags to protect them from wrinkles and spills.
  4. Use Every Inch of Space. Stuff socks and underwear into shoes or small gaps. Use packing cubes or ziplock bags to compress clothes and keep similar items together. Fill the perimeter of your suitcase first, then work toward the center. Tuck belts around the inside edge of your suitcase and store jewelry in small containers or pill organizers.
  5. Pack Essentials in Carry-On. Always pack medications, important documents, a change of clothes, and valuable items in your carry-on bag. Include phone chargers and any items you'll need during travel or immediately upon arrival. This protects you if checked luggage gets lost or delayed.
  6. Final Check and Close. Do a final check against your packing list to make sure you haven't forgotten anything important. Press down gently on packed items to compress them, then zip your suitcase slowly to avoid catching fabric. If it won't close easily, remove a few items rather than forcing it - overpacked bags are more likely to break or exceed weight limits.
