How to Iron a Shirt: A Step-by-Step Guide for the Whole Family
Learn the proper technique for ironing shirts with clear steps that parents can teach children of all ages.
- Set Up Your Ironing Station. Choose a stable surface and set up your ironing board at the right height - it should hit just below your hip bone. Plug in your iron and fill it with water if it has a steam function. Let the iron heat up to the appropriate temperature for your shirt fabric (check the care label). Cotton shirts typically need high heat, while synthetic blends need medium heat. Keep a spray bottle with water nearby for stubborn wrinkles.
- Prepare the Shirt. Start with a clean, damp shirt - either freshly washed or lightly sprayed with water. Button up the shirt completely and lay it flat on a clean surface. Check all pockets and remove any items. Smooth out major wrinkles with your hands before you begin ironing.
- Iron the Collar and Cuffs First. Begin with the collar, laying it flat on the ironing board. Iron from the points toward the center, pressing firmly but not dragging the iron. Flip the collar and repeat on the other side. For cuffs, unbutton them and lay flat, ironing both sides. These smaller areas need extra attention since they frame your face and hands.
- Iron the Sleeves. Lay one sleeve flat on the ironing board, smoothing out wrinkles with your hands first. Start at the shoulder seam and work down to the cuff in long, smooth strokes. Be careful around the seam - you can iron over it, but don't press too hard. Flip the sleeve and repeat, then do the other sleeve.
- Iron the Body of the Shirt. Start with the back panel, laying it flat across the ironing board. Work from top to bottom in overlapping sections. Next, do the front panels one at a time, being extra careful around buttons - iron around them rather than over them. For button plackets, slide the iron nose between buttons or use the iron's tip for precision.
- Finish and Hang. Give the shirt a final once-over, checking for missed spots. While the shirt is still warm, hang it immediately on a good hanger to prevent new wrinkles from forming. Button the top button and smooth the collar into place. Let it cool completely before putting it away.
