How to Make Chocolate Truffles with Your Family
Learn to make delicious homemade chocolate truffles with simple ingredients and easy steps perfect for all family members.
- Gather Your Ingredients and Tools. You'll need heavy cream (1/2 cup), dark chocolate chips or chopped chocolate (8 ounces), vanilla extract (1 teaspoon), and cocoa powder for rolling (about 1/2 cup). For tools, gather a medium saucepan, mixing bowl, whisk, measuring cups, a baking sheet, parchment paper, and a small spoon or melon baller for scooping. Optional coatings include chopped nuts, shredded coconut, or powdered sugar.
- Make the Chocolate Ganache. Place the chocolate in a medium mixing bowl. Heat the heavy cream in a saucepan over medium heat until it just starts to bubble around the edges - don't let it boil. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and let it sit for 2 minutes without stirring. Then whisk gently from the center outward until the mixture becomes smooth and glossy. Stir in the vanilla extract. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours until the mixture is firm enough to scoop.
- Shape the Truffles. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Use a small spoon or melon baller to scoop portions of the chilled ganache - aim for pieces about the size of a large grape. Place each scoop on the parchment paper. If the mixture gets too soft while working, pop it back in the refrigerator for 15 minutes. Once all portions are scooped, use your hands to gently roll each piece into a ball. Don't worry about making them perfectly round - rustic shapes add character.
- Add the Final Coating. Put your chosen coating (cocoa powder, chopped nuts, or coconut) in a shallow bowl. Roll each truffle ball in the coating until completely covered, then place back on the parchment-lined baking sheet. For cocoa powder coating, you can use a fine-mesh sieve to dust them for an even finish. Store finished truffles in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to one week.
