How to Make a Birthday Cake from a Box Mix
Learn to bake a delicious birthday cake from a box mix with simple steps that work for any family celebration.
- Gather Your Ingredients and Supplies. You'll need one box of cake mix, eggs (usually 2-3, check the box), vegetable oil (typically 1/3 cup), and water. Grab two 9-inch round cake pans or one 9x13 inch pan, measuring cups, a large mixing bowl, an electric mixer or whisk, cooking spray or butter, and flour for dusting. Don't forget candles and your favorite frosting for decorating.
- Prepare Your Pans and Oven. Preheat your oven to the temperature shown on the box (usually 350°F). Spray your cake pans with cooking spray or rub with butter, then lightly dust with flour, tapping out any excess. This prevents sticking and helps your cake come out cleanly. Place pans on the counter and set aside.
- Mix the Cake Batter. Empty the cake mix into your large bowl. Add the exact amounts of eggs, oil, and water called for on the box. Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat for 2 minutes until the batter is smooth and well combined. If mixing by hand, whisk vigorously for 3-4 minutes. The batter should be smooth with no dry spots or lumps.
- Pour and Bake. Divide the batter evenly between your prepared pans if making a layer cake, or pour all into one pan for a sheet cake. Gently tap the pans on the counter to release air bubbles. Bake for the time specified on the box (typically 28-33 minutes for round pans, 28-31 minutes for a sheet cake). The cake is done when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs.
- Cool and Decorate. Let the cake cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely before frosting. This prevents the frosting from melting. Once cool, place one layer on your serving plate, spread frosting on top, add the second layer, then frost the top and sides. Add candles, sprinkles, or other decorations as desired.
