How to Make a Video Game Using Roblox Studio
A step-by-step guide for families to create their first video game together using Roblox Studio's free tools.
- Get Started with Roblox Studio. First, create a free Roblox account at roblox.com if you don't already have one. Download Roblox Studio from the website - it's completely free. Once installed, open Roblox Studio and choose a template to start with. The 'Baseplate' template is perfect for beginners as it gives you a simple, empty world to build in. Take a few minutes to explore the interface together - the main window shows your game world, and the toolbox on the left has parts you can add to your game.
- Design Your Game World. Start building your game world by adding objects from the toolbox. Click and drag parts like blocks, spheres, and cylinders into your game space. You can change their size by clicking on a part and dragging the small circles that appear around it. Change colors by selecting a part, then clicking the color options in the properties panel. Create simple structures like houses, obstacles courses, or race tracks. Don't worry about making it perfect - you can always change things later. Try adding a spawn point where players will start by inserting a 'SpawnLocation' from the toolbox.
- Add Interactive Elements. Make your game more exciting by adding interactive parts. Insert a 'Script' or 'LocalScript' from the toolbox to make things happen in your game. For beginners, try simple actions like making a part disappear when touched, or creating a teleporter that moves players to different areas. Roblox Studio has built-in code templates that you can use - just right-click on a part and explore the 'Insert Object' menu. Add sounds, lighting effects, or moving platforms to make your game more engaging. The toolbox also has free models created by other users that you can add to your game.
- Test and Share Your Game. Before sharing your game, test it thoroughly by clicking the 'Play' button in Roblox Studio. Walk around your game world as if you're a player and check that everything works as expected. Make sure players can't get stuck anywhere and that all interactive elements work properly. When you're happy with your game, click 'File' then 'Publish to Roblox' to share it with others. You can choose to make it public for everyone to play, or keep it private for just friends and family. Give your game a catchy name and write a description that explains what players can expect.
