How to Make a Zipline for Stuffed Animals

Create a fun indoor zipline using household items to give stuffed animals an exciting ride across the room.

  1. Gather Your Materials. You'll need: a long piece of string, yarn, or thin rope (at least 6 feet), two sturdy anchor points like doorknobs or chairs, a small basket or cloth bag to hold the stuffed animal, and a carabiner clip or large paperclip to attach the basket to the line. Optional items include duct tape for securing connections and pillows to create a soft landing zone.
  2. Choose Safe Anchor Points. Look for two solid points at different heights to create a slope. Good options include a doorknob and a chair back, two chairs of different heights, or a hook on the wall and a table leg. Make sure both anchor points can support gentle tugging without moving or breaking. The higher point should be at least 2-3 feet above the lower point for a good ride.
  3. Set Up the Zipline. Tie one end of your string securely to the higher anchor point using a strong knot like a double knot or bowline. Stretch the string to your lower anchor point, pulling it taut but not overly tight. Tie the other end securely. Test the line by gently pulling on it to make sure both knots hold firm and the line has a clear downward slope.
  4. Create the Carrier. Take your small basket or cloth bag and attach it to the zipline using a carabiner clip or large paperclip bent into a hook shape. The carrier should slide smoothly along the line. If using a paperclip, make sure the ends are smooth to avoid catching on the string. Test the carrier by sliding it back and forth along the line before adding any passengers.
  5. Safety Setup and Testing. Place soft pillows or cushions at the landing area to catch the stuffed animals safely. Make sure the zipline path is clear of obstacles, furniture corners, or anything breakable. Test the zipline with a small stuffed animal first, giving it a gentle push from the top. Adjust the line tension if needed - too tight and it might snap, too loose and the ride will be slow.
  6. Launch and Play. Help your child place a stuffed animal in the carrier at the high end of the zipline. Give it a gentle push to start the journey down. Kids can create stories about their stuffed animals' adventures, set up rescue missions, or race different animals down the line. Supervise younger children and remind them this is only for stuffed animals, not other toys or objects.
