How to Build a Treehouse Platform

Learn to safely build a sturdy treehouse platform with step-by-step guidance for this fun family building project.

  1. Choose the Right Tree and Location. Select a healthy, mature tree with a trunk at least 12 inches in diameter. Look for strong, living branches that can support weight without bending. Oak, maple, and large pine trees work well. Avoid trees with signs of disease, dead branches, or insect damage. Check local building codes and homeowner association rules before starting. Consider your neighbors' views and property lines. The platform should be 6-10 feet high for safety while still feeling adventurous.
  2. Gather Tools and Materials. You'll need: pressure-treated 2x8 lumber for joists, 3/4-inch exterior plywood for decking, galvanized carriage bolts (1/2-inch diameter), washers, nuts, galvanized joist hangers, deck screws (2.5-inch), drill with bits, circular saw, level, measuring tape, pencil, and safety equipment including hard hats and safety glasses. Buy 20% more materials than calculated to account for mistakes. Use only galvanized or stainless steel hardware to prevent rust and tree damage.
  3. Design and Measure Your Platform. Keep your platform small to start - 6x8 feet is plenty for most families. Sketch your design on paper first. Measure twice, cut once. Mark where your support beams will attach to the tree, ensuring they're level. The platform should have at least three points of contact with the tree or support posts. Plan for a 2-inch gap between boards to allow for tree growth and water drainage. Remember that trees move in the wind, so your design must allow for some flexibility.
  4. Install the Support Structure. Start by marking your attachment points on the tree with a pencil. Drill pilot holes slightly smaller than your bolts to prevent the wood from splitting. Use carriage bolts to attach your main support beams to the tree, placing large washers on both sides to distribute weight. Don't over-tighten - the tree needs room to grow. If using multiple trees or adding posts, ensure all supports are level with each other. Check everything twice before proceeding to the next step.
  5. Build the Frame and Add Decking. Create your platform frame using 2x8 lumber spaced 16 inches apart. Use joist hangers to connect cross-beams for extra strength. Check that your frame is square by measuring diagonals - they should be equal. Secure the frame to your tree supports with carriage bolts. Cut your plywood decking to fit, leaving small gaps between sheets for drainage. Attach decking with deck screws every 8 inches along the edges and every 12 inches in the field. Sand all surfaces smooth to prevent splinters.
  6. Add Safety Features. Install a railing around the platform perimeter using 2x4 lumber. Rails should be 36 inches high minimum. Space balusters no more than 4 inches apart to prevent children from getting stuck. Build a sturdy ladder with rungs spaced 10-12 inches apart, or install climbing holds for older children. Consider adding a trap door entrance instead of an open edge. Round over all sharp edges and sand smooth. Apply weather-resistant stain or sealant to protect the wood.
