How to Build a Raft That Actually Floats
Build a simple floating raft using plastic bottles and basic materials with step-by-step instructions for kids.
- Prepare your bottles. Make sure all bottles are completely empty and dry. Screw the caps on tightly - this keeps air trapped inside, which is what makes them float. If any bottles have holes or cracks, don't use them.
- Arrange your platform. Lay your wooden boards side by side to create a rectangular platform. The boards should be close together with no big gaps. If using pallets, you can use 2-3 smaller ones or 1 large one.
- Position the bottles. Place bottles underneath your platform in two rows. Space them evenly - about 1 bottle every 12-18 inches. The bottles should be lying on their sides with caps facing the same direction.
- Secure bottles to the platform. Use rope or zip ties to attach each bottle firmly to the wooden platform. Wrap the rope around the bottle and through gaps in the wood, then tie tight knots. The bottles shouldn't wiggle or slide around.
- Reinforce with duct tape. Wrap duct tape around the rope connections and anywhere the bottles meet the wood. This adds extra security and helps keep everything waterproof.
- Add extra flotation. If you have pool noodles, you can tape them to the sides of your raft for extra floating power. This also makes the edges softer if you bump into them.
- Test in shallow water. With a grown-up watching, gently place your raft in water that's only knee-deep. Step on carefully to see if it holds your weight. If it tips or sinks, you may need more bottles or better balance.
