How to Build a Safe Popsicle Stick Crossbow with Your Kids

Learn to make a fun, safe crossbow using popsicle sticks and rubber bands for an engaging family craft project.

  1. What You'll Need. Gather these materials before starting: 7-8 popsicle sticks, 3-4 rubber bands, 1 plastic spoon, cotton balls or mini marshmallows for ammunition, and scissors for adult use. You might also want wood glue for a more permanent version, though rubber bands work perfectly for temporary assembly. Make sure your popsicle sticks are clean and free from splinters.
  2. Create the Base Frame. Take three popsicle sticks and bundle them together. Wrap a rubber band tightly around one end, about half an inch from the tip. Repeat with another rubber band on the other end. This creates your crossbow's main body or 'stock.' Make sure the rubber bands are secure but not so tight that they crack the wood.
  3. Build the Cross Arms. Take two more popsicle sticks to form the horizontal arms where your 'bowstring' will attach. Position these perpendicular to your main body, about two inches from the front end. Secure them by wrapping rubber bands in an X-pattern where they intersect with the main body. The cross arms should extend equally on both sides.
  4. Add the Launching Mechanism. Take your plastic spoon and position it along the top of the main body with the bowl end pointing toward the back. The handle should extend slightly past the front of your crossbow. Secure the spoon handle to the popsicle stick base using rubber bands, wrapping them tightly to prevent the spoon from shifting during use.
  5. Create the Bowstring. Stretch a rubber band between the two cross arms to create your bowstring. This rubber band will provide the tension needed to launch your ammunition. Test the tension by gently pulling it back - it should have some resistance but not be so tight that young children can't operate it safely.
  6. Test and Adjust. Place a cotton ball or mini marshmallow in the spoon's bowl. Pull the spoon back gently until the rubber band bowstring is taut, then release. The ammunition should fly forward. If it doesn't work well, check that all rubber bands are secure and adjust the tension of your bowstring as needed.
