How to Make a Collage from Magazines with Your Kids

Create beautiful magazine collages with children of all ages using simple materials and easy techniques.

  1. Gather Your Materials. You'll need old magazines (ask friends, check libraries, or save your own), child-safe scissors, glue sticks or liquid glue, and paper or cardboard for the base. Optional extras include markers, crayons, or stickers to add personal touches. Choose magazines with lots of colorful pictures – food magazines, nature publications, and general interest magazines work great.
  2. Choose a Theme or Let It Flow. Decide if you want a themed collage (like animals, foods, or colors) or let your child create freely. Themes can help younger children focus, while older kids might enjoy the challenge of telling a story or creating a mood board. Some fun theme ideas include 'my favorite things,' 'dream vacation,' or 'rainbow collage' using pictures of different colors.
  3. Cut Out Pictures Together. Help your child flip through magazines and choose pictures they like. For younger children, you might do the cutting while they point out what they want. Older kids can practice their scissor skills by cutting around shapes – don't worry about perfect edges. Save interesting words, letters, and backgrounds too, not just main pictures.
  4. Plan Your Layout. Before gluing anything down, arrange the cut-out pictures on your paper. Move things around until you're both happy with how it looks. This is a great time to talk about what you see and why certain combinations work well together. Take a photo of arrangements you like before moving pieces around.
  5. Glue and Finish Your Collage. Start gluing pieces down, working from the background to the foreground. Show your child how to put glue on the back of each picture, not directly on the paper. Let some pieces overlap for visual interest. Once everything is glued down, you can add drawn details, write words, or decorate the border together.
